I don’t know if you read the New York Times (digitally), but I’ve been appreciating how the company is leveraging digital media for the next generation of…media. This piece, “I Stutter. But This Is What You’re Not Hearing,” is superb.
I saw this video today, and it knocked me down. It is well worth the eight minutes, and it struck me as an impossibly perfect example of 100% Responsibility and Conscious Listening.
In terms of the latter concept, one way we do NOT listen consciously is that we hear people through listening filters. The examples we use in Conscious Leadership include personalizing, defending, correcting, solving, and more. In addition to the numerous examples of the solving/hero filter I talk about, this video helped me see a few other listening filters this stutterer notices in particular: impatience, “they’re not very smart,” etc.
May we all turn on our internal Listenometer more, regardless of the speaker’s neurology.
